Fellowships, Awards & Grants

Long dedicated to supporting cutting-edge research on Europe and European affairs, the Council for European Studies (CES) offers a variety of fellowships, grants and awards. In particular, the Council is a major funder of dissertation research and early career development for academics and policy specialists working on Europe. Likewise, the Council recognizes and encourages outstanding scholarly work on Europe by awarding prizes to those whose work has significantly advanced the field of European Studies. Below is a list of the Council's current fellowship, grants and award programs. Since this list is constantly changing, those interested in applying for funding from the Council for European Studies are encouraged to check back regularly.


Fellowships

Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion FellowshipsMellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships

The Council for European Studies (CES) invites eligible graduate students to apply for the 2015 Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships in European Studies.  Each fellowship includes a $25,000 stipend, paid in six (6) bi-monthly installments over the course of the fellowship year, as well as assistance in securing reimbursements or waivers in eligible health insurance and candidacy fees. Learn more...
 

CES Pre-Dissertation Research FellowshipCES Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowships

The Council for European Studies invites eligible graduate students to apply for the 2015 CES Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowships. Each fellowship includes a $4,000 stipend, the opportunity to publish in Perspectives on Europe, a bi-yearly journal of the Council for European Studies, and other professional development activities. CES Pre-Dissertation Fellowships fund two months’ travel to Europe to conduct the exploratory phase of a projected dissertation project. Harriman-CES Pre-Dissertation Research FellowshipHarriman-CES Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowship (PDF)

The Harriman Institute and the Council for European Studies (CES) invite eligible Columbia University graduate students to apply for the 2015 Harriman-CES Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowship. Each fellowship includes a $4,000 stipend, travel support for attending and presenting at the International Conference of Europeanists, and the opportunity to publish in Perspectives on Europe, a semi-annual journal of the Council for European Studies.



Awards & Prizes

CES European Studies Book AwardEuropean Studies Book Award

The European Studies Book Award is awarded every two years and honors the best first book on any subject in European Studies published within a two-year period. A multi-disciplinary Book Award Committee (appointed by the Council’s Executive Committee) chooses the winner, and a formal presentation of the award is conducted at the Council’s International Conference of Europeanists. The winning author receives $1,000 and travel assistance to attend the conference and award ceremony. Learn more...


CES European Studies First Article PrizeEuropean Studies First Article Prizes

Two prizes were awarded in 2014, one to a scholar working in the humanities and one to a scholar working in the social sciences. These prizes honored the writers of the best first articles on European Studies published within a two-year period. A multi-disciplinary First Article Prize Committee appointed by the Council’s Executive Committee chose the winner. Each prize winner received $500 and public recognition on the Council's website and publications. Learn more...
