***Reminder: The last day to request a refund for the Iceland 2020 Conference is Monday, June 1, 2020. If you already completed the request form there is no need to do so at this time. Your request will be reviewed shortly.***

Dear Members of the Council for European Studies,

Because of the ongoing threat posed by the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we regret to announce the cancellation of the 27th International Conference of Europeanists scheduled for June 22-24, 2020 in Reykjavik, Iceland.

While we hoped for the best, the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic has left us no choice. Our partnering venue, the University of Iceland has very appropriately informed us that they are unable to host us given the circumstances, and we believe that there is a very high chance that travel restrictions and social distancing measures will still be in effect in June. Protecting the health and safety of our members, attendees, and exhibitors is our top priority. We hope that making this difficult decision now reduces the uncertainty and disruptive effects of cancellation on short notice.

The CES conference Program Committee, the Local Organizing Committee, the CES Executive Committee, and the CES staff have all worked with dedication to prepare a successful event. We were very excited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our organization. Considering the number of applications received this year, we believe that this excitement was widely shared, and we very much regret the cancellation.

We understand this is disappointing news accompanied by a number of challenges for the participants who have already registered and made flight and hotel reservations. Rest assured that CES is committed to helping our members as best we can. Our resources, however, are limited to facilitating your inquiries with third parties involved.

CES is offering full registration refunds via the initial method of payment via this form.

Below is a list of frequently asked questions. We will be in touch with travel grant fellows and other prizewinners shortly. In addition, we will reach out in the coming weeks with more information about how our members can stay engaged with one another before we next meet in 2021.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and unwavering commitment to the Council for European Studies. We wish you all health and safety during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Erik Bleich, CES Chair

Nicole Shea, Director
