24th International Conference - Submission Portal

Sustainability and Transformation

University of Glasgow, UK • July 12-14, 2017
Organized by the Council for European Studies

Submissions are now closed - we hope to see you in Glasgow!

Europe is currently sinking into its deepest morass since the 1960s. Questions about the sustainability of European political economies, social solidarity, party systems, values, and the project of European integration abound. With the British voting to leave the European Union, and powerful political forces in other member states pressing for similar moves, the future of the EU is on the line. Paraphrasing the famous quote from Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s great novel The Leopard, “for things to remain the same, everything must change.” Many argue: if Europe is to reinvigorate its economy, society, politics, and culture, transformations are necessary.

Thus, for its 2017 conference, the Council for European Studies (CES) invites proposals for panels, roundtables, book discussions, and individual papers that investigate the transformations Europe currently faces, as well as the major changes required to respond to them.

To submit a proposal to the 24th International Conference of Europeanists, please choose the type of proposal you wish to submit below.

Papers are presented by their author(s) and address a particular topic.

Sessions involve a moderator and discussants, and can take three forms:

  • Paper panels consist of 4-5 papers organized around a common theme with comments provided by a chair and a discussant.
  • Book panels (also known as "Author Meets Critics") bring together 4-6 scholars to debate a recent publication in the field and are moderated by a chair.
  • Roundtables assemble 4-6 scholars to discuss a common theme, idea, or topic with moderation provided by a chair.

Mini-Symposia are a thematic cluster of 3-5 sessions of any of the above types grouped together

Proposals may be submitted until October 16, 2016 at 11:59 PM EST.

We strongly encourage participants to submit in the widest range of disciplines and, in particular, proposals that combine disciplines, nationalities, and generations. Fully organized panel proposals will be given top priority in the selection process by the Program Committee. Although it is not mandatory that papers be related to the conference theme, papers that do so are especially welcome. For more information on the conference theme, please read the full Call for Proposals.

Please refer to our Submission Help page for specific instructions on how to use the 2017 CES Conference Submission Portal. Visit our Conference Frequently Asked Questions page for more information about proposal types and requirements.
