Network Description

Pedagogy is one common link between all scholars of European Studies. The Critical European Studies Research Network seeks to create a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and socially engaged model of pedagogical exchange and criticism. As such, it positions itself at the intersection of other Research Networks as a place of collaboration between researchers who work on curriculum development, interrogate the evolution of education-focused institutional landscapes, scrutinize the changing hierarchies between students and instructors, and assess the ways in which new media transforms education in the 21st century. While novel tools have given educators innovative means to carry out their mission, it is also important to be critical about the inequalities and injustices that new patterns and practices may yield. By strengthening ties across disciplines, generations, and national borders, the Research Network constitutes a space where CES’ commitment to developing new approaches to teaching and learning gets realized.

Within CES, the objective of the Critical European Studies Research Network is to stimulate, support, organize, and enhance critical explorations into teaching and learning, as well as foster the emergence of a community of scholars who reflect on education, education systems, and education practices in European Studies—engaging with issues of equality and justice in learning environments. It further seeks to influence positive political and social change by motivating innovative curriculum development and effective training in the classroom and beyond. By providing a forum for dialogues between fellow educators and students, the Research Network strives to encourage leadership development and mentorship of educators and students of diverse backgrounds interested in European Studies, helping to cultivate the next generation of scholars and educators. The Research Network is particularly interested in engaging with the opportunities for cross-border connections made possible by the digitalization of education. Working alongside CES’ other Research Networks as a bridge between research and pedagogy, the Research Network is also keen to contribute to the lessening of hierarchies in education and provide a space for shared reflection between faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, academic administrators and program directors, librarians and information scientists, and all who partake in higher education systems. To this end, we encourage members with diverse backgrounds and levels of experience in the Academe to participate.

The Research Network diffuses its action through CES’ global online journal and flagship publication arm EuropeNow. Specifically, it contributes to making the “Campus” section of the journal into a platform where pedagogical knowledge and research is disseminated. The goal of Campus is to foster and enrich exchanges over the teaching of specific topics pertaining to contemporary European debates. Through its different content types, EuropeNow Campus complements the activities of the Research Network by actively promoting a culture of sharing best practices and encouraging the creation of a pedagogical commons to become a go-to platform for teaching Europe. It also encourages critical reflections on higher learning contexts and actors, helps scholars think through digital methodologies, and seeks to break down rigid hierarchical boundaries—for example by reserving a corner of Campus for student contributions.
