Campus Spotlight: Center for European and Mediterranean Studies, NYU

Pushing the Boundaries of Europe – NYU’s Center for European and Mediterranean Studies’ academic interests extend around the globe and to worlds beyond, from energy and climate policy, to far right politics, to sovereignty in maritime search and rescue, to outer space and extraterrestrial life.

Since its founding in 1831, NYU has been an innovator in higher education, reaching out to an emerging middle class, embracing an urban identity and professional focus, and promoting a global vision that informs its 20 schools and colleges. Today, that trailblazing spirit makes NYU one of the most prominent and respected research universities in the world, featuring a variety of top-ranked academic programs. The university’s commitment to expanding the scope of its academic studies to include new perspectives and frontier research is reflected at the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies (CEMS).

Founded in 1991, CEMS has embarked upon innovations to its teaching and programming with a commitment to fostering interdisciplinary perspectives and expanding the intellectual boundaries of European studies.

CEMS distinguishes itself by advancing a multidimensional approach to the study of Europe, with an additional focus on the Mediterranean and Eastern European regions. This is reflected most vividly in our faculty members who are engaged in research that explores less charted avenues. Their studies range from history and political science to sociology, music, and philosophy, and address key social and political issues of our time from diverse perspectives.

Among our scholars is a visiting assistant professor focusing on search and rescue in Europe and the Mediterranean and visiting scholars in Catalan studies. Our faculty are also leading the way in exploring critically important topics in Eastern Europe and applying cutting edge research and teaching to European democratic institutions, energy and climate policyEuropean technology studies, and populism and nationalism. CEMS cultivates lasting collaborations with departments across NYU that allow faculty and students to pioneer and enhance their interdisciplinary work.

In addition to our faculty expertise in the study of Europe and the Mediterranean, CEMS hosts a variety of series throughout the academic year, including the European Seminar Series; NYU Space Talks: History, Politics, Astroculture; and the Eastern Europe Workshop. These series provide platforms for scholars, students, and professionals from around the world to engage in meaningful dialogue and exchange ideas about Europe. As the hub for all things Europe at NYU, CEMS collaborates with other centers and departments to bring leading academics and professionals to NYU to explore interdisciplinary approaches and expand the intellectual boundaries of European studies.
