Solidarity with Ukraine

The Council for European Studies condemns in the strongest possible terms Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. We stand in solidarity with our Ukrainian friends and colleagues as they fight to preserve their democratic institutions, their right to self-determination, and their sovereignty.

Scholars in North America and Western Europe created the Council for European Studies in 1970 in the midst of the Cold War to promote research and cooperation on questions of peace and democratic institution-building in Europe. It is with deep concern, outrage, and sadness that we find ourselves witnessing a brutal assault on hard-won democratic institutions in Ukraine and an attack on the security order that has contributed to decades of peace and stability in Europe. We deplore the violence, loss of life, and individual hardships that we are seeing unfold on television and social media.

We pledge our unwavering support to our Ukrainian colleagues and friends in their resistance against Russian aggression.
