CfP: Panel: AI in the Classroom – Alternate Takes

By this point, the claim that Generative AI has upended higher learning surprises no one. The technology is active everywhere, from basic internet searches to word processing editing software to countless apps performing enumerable tasks. The Humanities and Social Sciences have been uniquely impacted as the traditional model of instruction – reading and writing for homework, discussions and lectures in class- is no longer viable, at least in large introductory surveys. In short, we, as collegiate educators, need to find new ways to deliver information, encourage informed discussion, and cultivate and evaluate critical thinking and subject specific skills both to prepare students for employment and a life of continued learning and to secure the future viability of our fields in the academy.
This Call for Panelists seeks proposals from professors, instructors, and advanced graduate students with classroom teaching experience that address how they have adapted their classroom to our protean age of AI. Priority will be given to presentations on either a specific method of instruction or an assignment/unit that encourages students to engage with AI responsibly to foster critical analytical, reading, statistical, writing, or other skills central to our respective disciplines. Proposals dealing with interdisciplinary projects are also encouraged. The goal is not to whitewash AI or downplay its detrimental effects whether realized or anticipated. Rather, with the understanding that AI is present and transforming all spheres of life within and beyond the university, the organizers intend this panel to highlight ways to deploy AI in the classroom and, in the process, foster a discussion of its constructive educational uses.
